Like Valve filed for some oddly specific patents a few months ago (in south korea), and a bunch of them where related to wireless transfer low latency of large ammounts of data (Like a wireless PCVR headset would need to achive resolutions only achived by wired systems today), position tracking related hardware without the need of a base station, and some tech that MIGHT be usable to track the I've almost pulled the trigger on a used Index set a few times, but $500-600 is still too much, even though Valve is the only company realistically committed to supporting VR on Linux. If the game you're playing has it's own crappy mirror, try to move the SteamVR mirror to a secondary monitor or drag the game's mirror off screen somewhere. It works for the most part, but the mirrored content shown on the TV is zoomed in much farther than the FOV actually shown when wearing the headset. The lenses are so much better than the index, same with the removal of godrays. Plus, lenses that have crap quality are still going to look like crap in a larger FOV. Quest 3 absolutely, valve index has a very bad resolution and it's getting older, for price and advanced tech i think quest 3 it's way better than Valve Index, it's also portable and can do pcvr too. Even if fov is better with Quest 3 than Quest 2, Index still has bigger fov too, especially vertically. I actually have a Quest 2 and it's great, i use it for pcvr, and when quest 3 comes out im going to buy it without thinking about it xD The expanded FoV is based on being able to adjust the headset so your eyes are closer to the screen, but not everyone will be able to get their eyes as far in as possible (which is how you get the advertised FoV). This will merge both eyes into one wide FoV mirror for spectators to see and get a good idea of what you see. What it displays towards the edges is definitely not clear / readable off-axis (no VR headsets are that I know of, perhaps Varjo, but that's not a real option), but awareness--particularly SA is definitely improved.
